The world is more open to LGBTQ+ travelers than it has ever been, and the range of genuinely welcoming destinations has expanded significantly over the past decade. Marriage equality now exists across much of Europe, large parts of the Americas, and growing sections of the Asia-Pacific region. More importantly, the culture in many of the world's great travel destinations has shifted in ways that go beyond the law: queer couples move through cities like Lisbon, Buenos Aires, and Bangkok with a freedom and ease that would have been harder to find twenty years ago.


But not all destinations are equal, and the gap between what a country's laws say and what it actually feels like to be a same-sex couple checking into a boutique hotel in a small town two hours from the capital can be considerable. Knowing the difference is a meaningful part of what I do.


I have spent years building the partner network and destination knowledge that lets me send clients anywhere on this list with confidence. What follows is the honest version of that list: where the welcome is genuine, where it comes with nuance, and how to think about finding the right fit for your specific trip.


Europe: The World's Deepest Bench


Europe has more top-ranked LGBTQ+ travel destinations than any other region, and for good reason. Marriage equality is now the norm across most of Western and Northern Europe, anti-discrimination protections are generally strong, and the cultural welcome in major cities reflects decades of LGBTQ+ visibility and Pride tradition. If you are planning a first international trip as an LGBTQ+ couple or want the most straightforward combination of legal security and cultural ease, Europe is where the conversation starts.


Iceland

Iceland leads the 2026 Spartacus Gay Travel Index at number one, and the ranking reflects a reality that travelers consistently report: Reykjavik is one of the most genuinely welcoming cities in the world for LGBTQ+ visitors. The country has comprehensive marriage equality, strong anti-discrimination protections, and a culture in which queer visibility is normalized in daily life rather than confined to specific neighborhoods or events. Reykjavik Pride is among the most celebrated in Europe relative to the city's size. The natural landscape, the Northern Lights, the geothermal pools, the raw volcanic terrain, makes Iceland unlike anywhere else on earth, and the LGBTQ+-inclusive culture makes the entire country accessible in a way that is immediately felt.


Spain


Spain has had marriage equality since 2005, making it one of the earliest countries in the world to extend those rights, and the cultural confidence that comes with two decades of legal recognition is evident. Barcelona is one of the great gay travel cities in the world, with the Eixample neighborhood, known locally as the Gayxample, home to a dense cluster of LGBTQ+ bars, restaurants, and hotels that has been thriving for decades. Madrid's Chueca district is similarly established. Andalusia, including Seville and Granada, offers a more historically layered and romantic travel experience. Portugal


Portugal is one of the most consistently recommended destinations in our network, and the recommendation keeps earning itself. Marriage equality has been in place since 2010, and the culture in Lisbon and Porto is genuinely progressive in the lived sense, not just on paper. Lisbon rewards time spent wandering through the Alfama and Mouraria neighborhoods. The Algarve coastline is among the best in Europe. The Alentejo wine region is extraordinary for couples who want a slower, more immersive travel experience. France


France has had marriage equality since 2013 and a long tradition of LGBTQ+ culture in Paris stretching back well before legalization. The Côte d'Azur, including Nice, Antibes, and the surrounding coastline, offers a warmer, slower southern France experience with excellent food and the particular Mediterranean light that makes everything look slightly unreal. Ireland

Ireland was the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage by popular referendum, in 2015, and that distinction matters beyond its symbolic weight: a nation that votes for marriage equality reflects a cultural shift that is felt when you travel there. Dublin has a vibrant LGBTQ+ community, a dramatically improved food and restaurant scene, and a warmth and literary energy that makes it one of the most engaging cities in Europe to spend a few days. The west of Ireland, including the Wild Atlantic Way, the Cliffs of Moher, Connemara, and the Dingle Peninsula, is where Ireland becomes exceptional. Greece


Greece legalized same-sex marriage in February 2024, becoming the first Orthodox-majority country in the world to do so. Santorini and Mykonos have long been among the most popular LGBTQ+ travel destinations in Europe, with Mykonos carrying a decades-long history as a welcoming island for queer travelers. The caldera experience in Santorini, the cave hotels of Oia, and the Mykonos beach scene represent very different travel experiences, and Athens, often underestimated as a romantic city, has become an exceptional food and culture destination that pairs naturally with a week on the islands.


Germany and the Netherlands


Berlin has been one of Europe's great queer cities for generations, with a nightlife and arts culture that draws LGBTQ+ travelers from across the world. Germany has had marriage equality since 2017 and anti-discrimination protections that are among the most comprehensive in Europe. The Netherlands, and Amsterdam specifically, holds a particular place in LGBTQ+ history as the country that legalized same-sex marriage first, in 2001, and Amsterdam's canal-side culture remains deeply welcoming and visually extraordinary.


The Americas


The Americas offer a wide range of LGBTQ+ travel experiences, from countries with comprehensive marriage equality and established queer communities to destinations that are culturally warm and welcoming without yet having full legal equality in place.


Argentina


Argentina was the first country in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage, in 2010, and Buenos Aires has been one of the most celebrated gay travel cities in the Americas for years. The Palermo neighborhood is a center of LGBTQ+ life, with excellent restaurants, bars, and a visible community. The city's European architecture, tango culture, extraordinary food, and long evenings make it unlike any other South American capital. Colombia

Colombia legalized same-sex marriage in 2016 and has a growing and visible LGBTQ+ community in Cartagena and Medellín. Asia-Pacific


The Asia-Pacific region offers a more varied LGBTQ+ legal landscape than Europe or the Americas, but several destinations in the region are genuinely excellent for queer travelers and among the most memorable trips I book.


Thailand


Thailand has been a popular destination for LGBTQ+ travelers for decades, and for good reason: the culture in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the major resort islands is broadly welcoming and practiced at hosting international LGBTQ+ visitors. Thailand has made significant legal progress on marriage equality and LGBTQ+ recognition in recent years. The combination of extraordinary food, rich Buddhist culture, tropical beaches, and efficient infrastructure makes Thailand one of the highest-value travel experiences in the world. Australia and New Zealand
