If there is one question I get asked more than any other, it is this one: "Scott, should we go with Virgin Voyages or Celebrity Cruises?"

Celebrity Beyond at Sea

I get it. Both lines are genuinely wonderful. Both have earned real credibility with LGBTQ+ travelers. And at first glance, they can seem interchangeable -- two premium cruise lines with modern ships, beautiful itineraries, and a reputation for being welcoming. But spend a little time on either one and you quickly realize they are delivering fundamentally different experiences.

Scarlet Lady at Sea

I have personally sailed with both, and I book travelers on both lines regularly. So this is not a side-by-side spec sheet. This is the honest take you would get if you asked me over coffee: what makes each one special, where each one falls short, and how to figure out which one is actually right for you.

The Fundamental Difference

Before we get into the details, here is the simplest way I know to frame this: Virgin Voyages feels like a boutique hotel that happens to float. Celebrity Cruises feels like a world-class luxury resort that happens to move.

Virgin Voyages launched in 2021 with a clear point of view. Adults only. No formal nights. No buffet. No kids. A design-forward, all-inclusive experience built for people who find traditional cruising a little stiff. The brand is playful, the ships are striking, and the onboard culture leans into self-expression and freedom. That energy resonates deeply with a lot of LGBTQ+ travelers, and it shows.

Celebrity Cruises has been around much longer and has spent decades earning its reputation as one of the most genuinely inclusive mainstream cruise lines in the industry. Their approach is less about being edgy and more about being excellent -- exceptional dining, stunning ships, a broad range of itineraries, and a consistent commitment to making LGBTQ+ travelers feel at home on every single sailing, not just during Pride month.

Neither of these is better in an absolute sense. They are different, and the right one depends entirely on you.

The LGBTQ+ Experience Onboard

Both lines walk the walk, but they do it differently.

On Virgin Voyages, inclusivity is woven into the fabric of everyday life on the ship rather than organized into specific events. The crew is trained with a genuine commitment to creating an environment where everyone belongs. You will find drag brunches, themed parties, and programming throughout the year, but the bigger thing is the vibe -- an atmosphere where LGBTQ+ travelers consistently report feeling completely themselves without a second thought. Virgin Voyages has been recognized as the number one LGBTQ+ cruise line, and that reputation did not come from a single event. It came from getting the culture right.

The Diva and other Happenings Cast Members are always around to make sure you're having a great time on Virgin Voyages.

On Celebrity Cruises, the LGBTQ+ programming is more structured and, honestly, really well done. Nearly every sailing begins with an LGBTQ Welcome Party on the first night -- a genuine icebreaker where you can meet other queer travelers and allies before the trip really gets going. The Friends of Dorothy cocktail hour is a fleet-wide tradition that has been bringing LGBTQ+ guests together for years. Every June, Celebrity runs a Pride Party at Sea across the entire fleet, with each ship handing off the celebration in a kind of worldwide relay. And Celebrity made history in 2018 as the first cruise line to perform a legal same-sex wedding at sea -- a milestone that tells you something important about where their values have been for a long time.

If you want a cruise where the entire culture feels LGBTQ+ affirming at all times, Virgin Voyages has the edge. If you want a cruise with dedicated, organized LGBTQ+ events and a long track record of advocacy, Celebrity delivers that beautifully.

Ships, Design, and Atmosphere

Virgin Voyages currently sails four ships: Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady, and Brilliant Lady. Every one of them was designed with a clear aesthetic -- bold, modern, and a little unexpected. The interiors feel more like a design-forward hotel than what most people picture when they think of a cruise ship. There are no buffet halls, no casinos dominating the center of the ship, and no endless corridors of identical staterooms. Spaces are intimate by cruise ship standards, which creates a sense of community that larger ships often struggle to achieve.

The adults-only policy is not just a selling point -- it genuinely changes the atmosphere. The pool areas are calm. The bars do not feel like a rush at a family resort. Late-night events have energy without chaos. For a lot of travelers, especially couples, this alone is worth the decision.

Celebrity Cruises' newest and most acclaimed ships are the Edge series: Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Apex, Celebrity Beyond, Celebrity Ascent, and Celebrity XCel. These are extraordinary vessels. The Magic Carpet -- a cantilevered floating platform that moves up and down the side of the ship and functions as a bar, restaurant, and event space depending on the deck -- has become one of the most photographed design features at sea. The ships are large, but thoughtfully designed to feel like you have room to find your own space.

Celebrity does sail with families on board, which is worth knowing if you are expecting a Virgin Voyages-style atmosphere. That said, the experience on Celebrity's Edge ships is sophisticated enough that it rarely feels like a family resort. The adult-focused areas of the ship more than hold their own.

Dining

This is where both lines genuinely shine, and where the comparison gets interesting.

Virgin Voyages made a deliberate decision to do away with the traditional cruise ship dining model. There is no main dining room with assigned seating and a set menu rotation. Instead, the ships offer more than twenty distinct restaurants and eateries, ranging from Razzle Dazzle (a playful vegetable-forward spot that also serves the best brunch at sea) to The Wake (a classic steakhouse with serious culinary ambition). All of these are included in your fare. No specialty dining surcharges, no reservations required for most. You eat where you want, when you want. For travelers who hate the rigidity of traditional cruise dining, this is a revelation.

Celebrity Cruises takes a more traditional approach to dining structure but executes it at a very high level. Main dining room meals are included, and the quality is consistently above average for cruise dining. The specialty restaurants -- places like Fine Cut Steakhouse, Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, and Rooftop Garden Grill -- are genuinely excellent, though they do carry an additional cover charge. On Celebrity Beyond, Le Voyage is the ship's flagship dining experience and it is worth every penny.

If you value maximum dining flexibility and having everything included, Virgin Voyages wins this category cleanly. If you prefer a structured dining experience with a few genuine culinary highlights worth paying for, Celebrity delivers that well.

Entertainment and Onboard Life

Virgin Voyages leans into nightlife, live music, and experiences that blur the line between entertainment and participation. Scarlet Night -- a fleetwide party where guests are encouraged to wear red -- has become something of a cultural moment aboard every sailing. There are live bands, DJ sets, themed events, and a general energy after dark that makes the ships feel alive in a way that is hard to describe without experiencing it. Group fitness classes (yoga, cycling, barre, and more) are included in every fare, and the Redemption Spa is one of the better spa experiences afloat.

Celebrity entertainment features world-class performances

Celebrity focuses on a broader, more varied entertainment lineup. Broadway-style productions, live music across multiple venues, game shows, trivia nights, and enrichment programming give the schedule a depth that suits longer sailings especially well. The Rooftop Garden on the Edge-class ships is a wonderful space -- an outdoor venue with live performances, movies under the stars, and a relaxed energy that is genuinely special on a warm night at sea.

The Suite Experience

If you are considering sailing in a suite, both lines have compelling options -- but they are aimed at different travelers.

Virgin Voyages' Rockstar Quarters and Mega Rockstar suites are designed by Tom Dixon and are genuinely striking. Marble bathrooms, stocked in-room bars, hammock-equipped terraces, and exclusive access to Richard's Rooftop -- a members-only sundeck with panoramic ocean views, pre-dinner cocktails, and a private atmosphere that feels a world apart from the rest of the ship. Rockstar guests also get priority boarding, priority dining reservations, and a dedicated team of Rockstar Agents. Mega Rockstar suites run from 570 to over 2,100 square feet and include a personal agent (not a shared team), unlimited streaming WiFi on two devices, complimentary transfers up to 50 miles from port, and free parking at Terminal V.

Celebrity's answer is The Retreat -- an all-suite, all-inclusive experience with a private restaurant, an exclusive sundeck, and a team of dedicated Personal Retreat Hosts who function more like a concierge team than a standard cabin crew. The Retreat lounge is a genuinely lovely space, and the private restaurant rivals the specialty dining venues on the ship. For travelers who want the most traditional definition of luxury at sea, The Retreat on Celebrity is hard to beat.

Itineraries

This is an area where Celebrity has a meaningful advantage, at least for now.

Celebrity Solstice in Alaska near a glacier

Celebrity sails to a genuinely impressive range of destinations: the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Alaska, Northern Europe, South America, the Galapagos, and beyond. Longer voyages of 10, 12, and 14 nights are common. If you want to see a specific corner of the world on a luxury cruise ship, Celebrity almost certainly goes there.

Virgin Voyages is still expanding its network. The Caribbean (including The Beach Club at Bimini, their private island destination) and the Mediterranean make up the core of their itinerary offerings, with some transatlantic crossings and additional routes being added. For most travelers, the destination selection is more than sufficient -- but if you have a specific bucket list destination in mind, it is worth checking Virgin's current itineraries to confirm they sail there.

Pricing and Value

Both lines sit in the premium cruise segment, above mass market lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean but below the ultra-luxury tier of Explora Journeys or Regent Seven Seas.

Scarlet Night Pool Party
Scarlet Night Ends with a giant pool party

Virgin Voyages' all-inclusive fare model means the sticker price includes things that cost extra on most other lines: WiFi, group fitness, all dining, and essential non-alcoholic drinks. When you factor in what you are not paying for separately, the value equation is stronger than the base price might suggest. Rockstar suite pricing varies significantly by ship and sailing date.

Celebrity's pricing is more traditional -- the base fare covers your cabin, main dining room meals, and some entertainment, with specialty dining, premium drink packages, WiFi, and gratuities generally available as add-ons or bundled packages. The Always Included fare, which Celebrity often promotes, bundles drinks and WiFi into the base price and is included with every proposal I send because it's such a good value.

In my experience booking both lines, they tend to come out to similar overall costs for comparable cabin categories when everything is accounted for. The difference is in what that money buys -- and that comes back to the fundamental question of which experience fits you better.

So Which One Should You Choose?

Here is how I think about it when a traveler asks me this question.

Choose Virgin Voyages if you want an adults-only environment without exception, if the all-inclusive model appeals to you, if you love bold design and a vibrant nightlife-forward atmosphere, if you are sailing as a couple and want the ship to feel like a shared escape, or if you are a first-time cruiser who has been put off by the traditional cruise experience in the past.

Choose Celebrity Cruises if you want a wider selection of itineraries, if you are interested in sailing with friends or family who include non-LGBTQ+ travelers (Celebrity's inclusive culture is excellent for mixed groups), if you want dedicated LGBTQ+ programming built into the sailing schedule, if a same-sex wedding at sea is on your list, or if The Retreat suite experience is calling your name.

And if you honestly cannot decide? That is what I am here for. The right choice is rarely about which line is objectively better -- it is about which one matches your travel style, your itinerary dreams, and what you want to feel like when you are on board.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Virgin Voyages better than Celebrity Cruises for LGBTQ+ couples?

Both lines are genuinely welcoming for LGBTQ+ couples, but they deliver different experiences. Virgin Voyages offers an adults-only, all-inclusive atmosphere with a hipper, more energetic vibe. Celebrity Cruises offers a more classic luxury experience with dedicated LGBTQ+ programming like the Friends of Dorothy cocktail hour and fleetwide Pride events. The better choice depends on your travel style and what you want to feel like on board.

Is Celebrity Cruises LGBTQ+ friendly?

Yes, genuinely. Celebrity hosts LGBTQ Welcome Parties on the first night of nearly every sailing, runs Friends of Dorothy cocktail hours, holds a fleetwide Pride Party at Sea each June, and was the first cruise line to perform a legal same-sex wedding at sea in 2018. Their commitment to LGBTQ+ travelers goes back years and shows up consistently across the fleet.

Is Virgin Voyages adults-only?

Yes. All four Virgin Voyages ships -- Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady, and Brilliant Lady -- are exclusively for adults 18 and older. There are no children on any Virgin Voyages sailing, which is a meaningful part of the experience for many travelers.

What is included in a Virgin Voyages cruise fare?

Virgin Voyages includes WiFi, all group fitness classes, dining at every onboard restaurant, and essential non-alcoholic drinks (sodas, drip coffee, teas, and still water) in every fare. Alcoholic beverages, specialty spa treatments, and some premium experiences are additional.

Which cruise line is better for a gay honeymoon?

For a romantic, couple-focused honeymoon, Virgin Voyages is hard to beat. The adults-only atmosphere, Rockstar suite experience, and all-inclusive inclusions create a natural honeymoon environment. That said, Celebrity Cruises' Retreat suites are exceptional for honeymooners who want a more traditional luxury experience, and Celebrity's broader itinerary selection means more destination options for couples with a specific place in mind.

Can you get married on Celebrity Cruises?

Yes. Celebrity Cruises was the first cruise line to perform a legal same-sex marriage at sea, in 2018. They offer wedding packages for same-sex couples and work with onboard coordinators to handle the details. If a wedding at sea is something you are dreaming about, I would love to help you plan it.
