A getaway like no other, this week we are traveling Over the Rainbow to the Mexican Rivera. The Mexican Riviera comprises 20 cities on the west coast of Mexico, known for its beautiful beaches, great water activities, remarkable restaurants, and fascinating culture.
Dating back to 1500 BCE, the first culture to dominate the area was the Olmecs—the Teotihuacan, followed by the Maya, and then by the Aztec Empire until the Spanish conquistadors. The Spanish have added flavor to the previous empires, and the struggle for independence shaped and reformed the modern-day culture. In the Riviera, you'll discover many unadulterated cultures and travel back in time to colonial times. Many local fishers will leave the ports early each morning to bring home the catch of the day. The West Coast of Mexico got its name from Princess Cruises when the company first introduced cruising to the area, and the name stuck.
You'll never lack things to do in the Mexican Riviera. One of my favorite things is zip-line through the forest on Los Cabos. As you are flying through the canopies or repelling down the sheer rock, you take in a side of Los Cabos that not many get to see. If death-defying stunts aren't your style, discover Tequila Tasting in the home of Tequila. This full-day tequila exploration of the oldest distillery in the Americas, La Rojeña. You'll take in the history, culture, and traditions of Tequila. Finally, take in the surf on the emerald coast in Oaxaca. Manzanita is a great beach to learn to surf or reach zen with the many yoga practitioners.
The Mexican Riviera is full of top destinations that have something for everyone. The first destination is Los Cabos, a perfectly relaxing alternative to Miami or Fort Lauderdale.
In Los Cabos, soak in the sun, and unwind on some of the most amazing beaches in the world. Travel a bit further south to Oaxaca for more beach experiences at the unique nude gay beach, then follow that up with a fantastic bar experience. Chocked full of clubs, check out the local favorite, La Chinampa Gay Bar, or the hidden gem of Luna Rossa, or an authentic dive bar, Envidia Gay Bar, and finally for the adventurous, the La Costa Night Club.
Take in Pride in the Mexican Riviera at Puerto Vallarta at the end of May. Through all of the festivities, local businesses, hotels activities, discounts on spa packages, or local cruises, including Diana's Tours or Jet's Private Boat Tours. It is unlike any other place to celebrate Pride.
