Aruba was first discovered in 1499 by Alonso de Ojeda, a Spanish explorer. After nearly 140-years of Spanish colonization, the Caquetio Indians, which were part of the Arawak Tribe, inhabited the island after migrating from Venezuela to avoid attacks.
